Ghostbuster Frozen Empire
Wow...My first writing related to the last movie
I walk to the movie theatre. Call me old fashion. The movie producers need to convince me to walk 30 minutes to get to the theatre and block out 2 hours of my busy life to see a movie. Well, in this case, my daughter who has changed a lot since the last movie came out did the convincing (she’s 13 now). She remembered the good times binging on Ghostbusters flicks that she wanted to relive the experience. And by the way it was my first movie to inspire me to write a review in 2021. If you asked me then how many musings I would have written, it would have been a lot more than I have shared.
While the father-daughter time was memorable, the movie was not. But our walk home dissecting the film I believe made the entire experience worth it. Here is a brief review between 45 year old dad and 13 year old daughter:
Reasons we didn’t like it:
The movie had Ghostbusters in the name, but all the charm and fun were removed. And how can you bust ghosts, if you are befriending one?
The two characters that stole the show were Kumail Nanjiani and the invisible ghost that possesses inanimate items and its invisible! We didn’t sign up for sidekicks to steal the show!
Too many characters. And too many old characters like Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd who showed their age and not their talent! (a lot of exclamation points today I know)
Too many plot points that were not developed
The focus of the young girl Pheobe Spengler is not why we signed up to see the movie. We wanted to see a bunch of friends and quirky characters.
No suspense. As soon as it was about to be suspensful it was not.
People other than main characters die from the freeze?
How did the bad dude know Phoebe would go to a lab and disaggregate her spirit from her body?
The opening car chase was boring. When the characters are all perfect and not worried, what’s the point of this?
We’ve seen just about every world devastation in NY why should I care?
Reasons why we went to see the film:
Ghostbuster’s humour.
Fun, adventure, and slightly scary
Slimer
Positives of the movie
The mother on the couch looking at her phone while her son complains about leak on roof “You’re 18 figure it out.”
Playing chess with a ghost
The villain is scary
Love the animated origin story of the villain
Kumail Nanjiani playing an eBay seller who is horribly bad at negotiating. But even this joke was a bit lame
Things that we would have liked to have seen
From secretary to bad-ass, Janine Melnitz becomes a Ghostbuster but they didn’t even give her a gun but a arm gun? Come on.
They had the old cast in the new era of NY. We saw the old and new in the Ghostbuster mythology, but why didn’t they talk about how times have changed? Only Janine quipped “in the 80s we didn’t think about the future”
As a reward for saving the city, 18 only gets key to car but maybe something else? Felt it was to throw-awayish.
Happy marriage? living together? No proposal? What the hell are they doing? No focus whatsoever. Maybe propose with some of the ancient relics?
If the new family dynamic is a dad who is just hooking up while fighting ghosts, lets be clear about it and don’t be shy. Moved all the way from Oklahoma for this.
And that was an enjoyable 30 minute walk. Hope you enjoyed as much as I did. The worse case, is I saved you some time and money.
