If you have ever worked with developers, especially the ones you outsourced, you may have had the experience of paying and getting an output you didn’t want and don’t know how to use.
Or that once you got involved, you started seeing all the ways you need to add more and more to the service or you fear, no customer will ever use it.
I am sure we have all experienced this in one way shape or form.
And why I started to appreciate my teachers and mentors especially when I didn’t deliver as expected.
Yesterday, I barely have a voice and am sick but I needed something done and at 1:30 am I’m reviewing in detail what needs to be done by 9 am. Yet, when I arrived at the office there was a beta version nowhere near to being complete.
I was pissed.
This is the part where you may express displeasure in an abusive manner, but instead I just said it’s a Monday morning. And first made notes asking “What part of important/immediate was not understood?”
Later in the day, he finished it surprisingly saying “I felt bad because were awake last night we didn’t fully comprehend urgency and also we didn’t have domain to setup”
What I see in this message is that his business is picking up and he provided me his 2nd tier staff who do not know how to deliver in an efficient manner.
Regardless, a hack, if there ever was one.

Have a checklist, keep it short, of key essentials that are not negotiable
Let him, in his own words, repeat back the discussion and expectation
That’s it. And if there is still a surprise in the morning. You ask him what happened. But before that you say “Good”
Why? Because you are moving the goal post where eventually you’ll get the outcome you require and learn effective management and how to handle disappointment.
